In Telegraph Hill ward Lewisham People Before Profit are supporting the Socialist Party candidates, Ian Page, Chris Flood and Jess Leech.
Ian and Chris are sitting councillors – Jess was narrowly defeated by New Labour in 2006 but, with the Labour councillor standing down in this election, must be well-placed to win.
Ian Page has been a councillor in the Telegraph Hill area for 20 years since he was first elected for Labour in 1990. He was expelled from the Labour Party in 1995 however, for resisting cuts to council services, and has been re-elected ever since as a socialist councillor. Chris Flood was elected in a council by-election in 2003 and was re-elected with an almost doubled vote in the last local elections in 2006.
Ian, Chris and Jess fully support the Lewisham People Before Profit coalition, that has brought together so many diverse campaigns across the borough in defence of public services.
Councillors don’t have to be the same…
Lewisham Socialist Party has produced regular Newsletters, under the title Socialist News, to keep local residents informed on what their councillors are doing. The last four years’ newsletters have now been pulled together into a comprehensive report on the activities and voting record of Lewisham’s councillors (below).
This report shows that, while there are secondary differences here and there, at bottom all the establishment parties support a ‘market methods’ approach to public services, which puts profits ahead of the interests of working people. But the report also shows that not all councillors are the same – and the potential and importance of the People Before Profit campaign.
